Zandvoort has yet to secure its F1 future

Back on the calendar in 2021, the Dutch Grand Prix had to set up the Zandvoort circuit for the occasion. If the presence of Max Verstappen in F1 is a reassuring factor for the future of the Grand Prix, the circuit has not yet renewed his contract.

Zandvoort’s long-term presence in F1 is not yet fully assured. Although the circuit is experiencing an assured influx, won over to the cause of Max Verstappen, for the time being the circuit contract expires at the end of 2023.

Zandvoort, in the long term in F1?

« It’s certainly not as simple as all white or all black »said circuit boss Robert van Overdijk when asked about upcoming negotiations with Formula 1. “We are not there yet, we are a 100% privately funded event, so we also need the support of sponsors”he told De Telegraaf.

« The municipality of Zandvoort is also the only government party that has been positive from day one, so it is obviously important for us that this remains the case. All these discussions have already started and we cannot forget that we have not organized the event only once. »

« If it depends on Formula 1, we will immediately sign a new contract »added van Overdijk. « But we’re not Bahrain. We can’t just sign until 2036. We don’t have a government supporting us every year and we have to organize everything ourselves. »

However, he is confident that the current talks will eventually lead to some kind of contract extension. “It looks positive on all fronts”continues van Overdijk. « We have agreed with FOM that clarity will be provided around November 1. So let’s deal with this second edition of the event first. »

Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad believe a new two-year deal could be in the cards. « We are in a fantastic position »replied van Overdijk. « Everyone has been praising us. But we have to keep our feet on the ground. We only organize an event if it’s 100% funded. »

Meanwhile, Dutch GP boss Jan Lammers has warned more agitated Dutch fans that Zandvoort will not tolerate the kind of behavior seen in Austria recently. “If you are drunk and rowdy in a pub, you will be kicked out”he told nu.nl. « There will be no difference given to Zandvoort. But Max himself has spoken about it, so I’m counting on the common sense of the fans »added Lammers, ex-Formula 1 driver.
