The Basel has signed up for three years. After Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Stoke City, Liverpool and Olympique Lyonnais, this is his sixth club abroad since leaving Switzerland in 2012.
The Chicago Fire spent eight million dollars to buy out Shaqiri’s contract from Lyon, which was valid until the summer of 2024. The team is currently in Florida preparing for the new season. She will play her first league game on February 26, against Inter Miami.
A goal against OM
On the occasion of his last match with Lyon, last week, Shaqiri had perhaps left some regrets to the Lyon supporters. In the 2-1 victory against Marseille, the international had scored a goal and made the assist on the 2-1.
But it was one of his rare strokes of brilliance of a half-season where nothing worked as hoped for him in the Rhône. In 16 matches, Shaqiri has scored two goals and made three assists. He arrived from Liverpool in August, for six million euros.
This transfer to the United States must also be understood in the context of the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year. The Basel needs as much playing time as possible. In Illinois, he should still muzzle internal competition.
