The young Normand driver, just barely 17 years old, made a remarkable debut in the Ultimate Cup Series last weekend at Magny-Cours.
Accompanied by the triple Champion, the Sarthois Antoine Robert, he climbed the podium from his debut in endurance.
Willyam Gosselin is currently playing his first motorsport season with the LR Promotion team. Managed by Manceau driver Lionel Robert, who is also his sports coach, this young driver is competing in the entire ‘Formula Cup by TTE’ Championship, of which he has recently entered the Top 5.
Last weekend on the Magny-Cours circuit, when he came for a simple day of single-seater testing, Willyam was offered the opportunity to replace the 3rd driver of the crew – Jordan Perroy victim of an attack of appendicitis – already formed by Antoine Robert and Stéphane Panepinto at the wheel of the Nova Proto NP02 of 420 horsepower.
An unforgettable experience that ended for the ‘rookie… on the podium!
A FIRST AT MAGNY COURS!
Obviously, the story looks like a fairy tale, yet the reality was a little more complicated to live at least at the beginning of the adventure.
The agreement with the Dijon team DB Autosport, loyal partner of LR Promotion, was signed on Thursday, the day before the first official tests.
Due to his experience, Antoine Robert was in charge of the first Friday tests before the Sarthois left Prenois and went the following day, Saturday, to the ‘Grand Prix Explorer, on the Bugatti circuit of Le Mans, to manage one of the novice drivers taking part in this highly publicized event.
Willyam Gosselin was to make his first laps aboard the Nova Proto on Friday evening but a jammed gearbox postponed this discovery until the next day.
Saturday morning was a revelation for young Willyam, who got out of the car with a big smile and stars in his eyes.
Saturday afternoon, the three drivers were to take part in qualifying (Antoine Robert having returned to Magny-Cours in the meantime).
Author of a decent performance just over a second a lap behind Antoine, Willyam Gosselin qualified brilliantly and could hope to do even better in the race.
Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m., Antoine Robert ensured the start for the crew of the N°2, before quickly handing over the wheel to Willyam Gosselin. The latter, whose stint was initially scheduled for 45 minutes, in fact had to provide a performance of almost an hour and a quarter without making any mistakes.
Improving his performance at each lap, the young boy bravely brought the car back to first place in the general classification at the end of his stint!
A few small technical problems then caused the car to drop in the standings, but the trio nevertheless ended this unprecedented experience with a fine third place in the Nova Proto category. (and 6th overall in the middle of the LMP3 prototypes).
See you now in the TTE Series and still at Magny-Cours, in a week
Willyam Gosselin will have little time to recover from his emotions as he will be at work again from 21 to 23 October for the penultimate meeting of the ‘Formula Cup within the framework of the TTE.
For the occasion, he will find Antoine Robert, his single-seater chief mechanic. As well as being an excellent driver, Antoine is also a professional race mechanic who technically directs the racing structure of LR Promotion.
