Willian: Arsenal forward saves £ 20million as transfer from Corinthians’ Brazilian side draws closer | Football news
Willian is saving Arsenal £ 20million by moving away from the club to join Brazil’s Corinthians in a free transfer.
Willian has two more years on his £ 240,000-a-week Arsenal contract, but instead of staying in the Emirates or asking for a refund, he will break his contract and sign for Corinthians within the next 48 hours.
Not only does the 33-year-old save £ 20million at Arsenal but he also suffers a 70% pay cut to return to his former club.
Arsenal managers would be surprised by Willian’s gesture.
Willian has been an exemplary professional since joining the Premier League eight years ago and he wants to leave English football with his head held high.
The Brazilian accepts that his move to Arsenal from Chelsea last summer didn’t work out and he wishes the whole club the best for the future.
Speaking earlier this week, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta confirmed that Willian has had discussions about a transfer to the Corinthians.
« We are having conversations with him and the agent, and we are assessing the position we are in right now, » Arteta said ahead of Saturday’s 5-0 loss to Premier League champions Manchester City.
» I do not know [why it hasn’t worked out for him here].
“Right now he’s an Arsenal player, and we’re trying to get the best of him while he’s here. Anything that is different is just things that can happen. «
