« Why have you always put Taribo West on my back? », the complicit exchange between Guy Roux and Thierry Henry

Legend of AJ Auxerre and French football, former coach Guy Roux was present at Abbé-Deschamps on Saturday to attend the meeting of his former team against Olympique de Marseille (0-2). At the microphone of Prime Video, the 83-year-old man had a fun and complicit exchange with another football legend, Thierry Henry.

Certainly the best meeting of the weekend. Present at the Abbé-Deschamps stadium, the place where he had his best years as coach of AJ Auxerre, Guy Roux certainly watched helplessly as the Auxerrois lost against Marseille (0-2), but gave football fans an amusing moment with the consultant, but above all former player Thierry Henry.

At the microphone of Premium Video, the former Arsenal striker shared all the good things he thinks of the 83-year-old and congratulated him on his glorious career: « Bravo for what you have done for this club and French football.  » While sharing his regret at not being able to see the legendary hat coach at work again: « I would have liked to see you with the new generation. » Certain images would certainly have been worth the detour, given the reputation of Guy Roux.

The anecdote with Taribo West

During his playing career, Henry was able to cross swords with Guy Roux. In the jersey of AS Monaco at that time, the current consultant says he had trouble getting Auxerre. Not least because of one player in particular, on whom he had a lot of difficulty getting the upper hand: « Why did you always put Taribo West on my back, You are not nice (laughs) »

In order to satisfy the curiosity of the former tricolor international, Guy Roux explained to him how the former defender reputed to be very rough, who became a pastor was important in his system. The reputation of the Nigerian was such that even the legend of PSG, Raï, had difficulty getting rid of him: « He was always designated to play on the biggest players of the opposing team, says Guy Roux. Raï m’ once said that if he hadn’t been a great professional, he would have had sore throat every game night because I had him scored by Taribo West. »

Before ending this exchange filled with nostalgia, Guy Roux gave his impressions of the start of the Auxerre season. Although he obviously hopes for the club to be maintained, the former coach is aware of the difficulties encountered by Benoît Costil’s teammates: « Auxerre is working very well. They were behind in their preparation because of the play-offs, some players are not still fit. They weren’t able to roam the collective as it was necessary. »
