After an eventful weekend, Simon Pagenaud took 8th position at the Gateway Grand Prix and climbed back to 7th place in the drivers’ standings.

The French driver achieved his best qualifying of the season (4th) but a collision on the 17th lap cut his efforts. Contact with his teammate Joseph Newgarden at turn 1 damaged the front wing of his car and forced him to stop to repair his car.

But a yellow flag on lap 60 allows him to catch up. Pagenaud tries everything for everything and recovers the lost positions. He even managed to lead the race for one lap thanks to a long, uninterrupted stint, then took advantage of the retirement of several of his competitors, finally taking 8th place.

“Very good qualifications for the entire Penske team, we were able to show ourselves at the forefront. Unfortunately, at the start of the race, a collision with Josef Newgarden tore my front wing. We had to stop to change it, which cost us a lap and certainly cost us the opportunity to fight for at least a podium when we had a high-performance car. We had to save gasoline during most of the stints and thanks to a good strategy and good restarts we were able to move up to 8th place. It’s a satisfying result but we missed an opportunity and it’s never nice to hang on with your teammate. It was a great race with a good team and good pit stops. The Chevrolet engine also performed very well. Now we have a three week break which will give the whole team a chance to rest before the final three races of the season on the West Coast, Portland, Laguna Seca and Long Beach, three tracks that I really like. «
