Wayne Rooney punishes his player for racist insults
Currently last in Major League Soccer with DC United, Wayne Rooney is having a complicated coaching experience with the American franchise where he has also evolved as a player. Last night he had a moment he would have done without against Inter Miami. In addition to the 3-2 defeat, his striker Taxiarchis Fountas (27) uttered a racist insult (Nigger’s note) towards Jamaican Damion Lowe (29). Logically scalded, the defender expressed his dissatisfaction and the game was stopped. Wayne Rooney then decided to punish his player – who had a good game and had scored – by taking him out of the field at the next stoppage in play and Miguel Berry replaced him.
After the meeting his counterpart and former Manchester United team-mate Phil Neville praised the behavior of the opposing coach: “I have to congratulate the referee for a really difficult situation. He followed the protocols set out by MLS, and I have to give credit to Wayne Rooney for handling it the way he did. I have always known him as someone who acts with class, continued the former Manchester United defender of his ex-teammate. He’s risen in my esteem again more than any goal he’s ever scored. The players were hurt and disappointed. I called the players because in my previous work with England we had a lot of experiences of racism in certain countries. I’m pretty knowledgeable on how to handle these situations. I don’t think I’ve ever been more proud of my players than tonight. » A strong gesture against racism which must continue to show that the union will always be stronger than hatred and human stupidity.
