Cagliari formalized Wednesday the appointment to the post of coach of the experienced Walter Mazzarri, ex-technician of Naples, Inter Milan and Torino, to replace Leonardo Semplici, thanked Tuesday. Mazzarri, who turns 60 on October 1, has been without a club since his ouster from Torino in February 2020. He signed up until June 2024, the Sardinian club said in a statement.
Cagliari, who escaped with a thousand difficulties last season, is 17th in Serie A after three days, with just one point. After the initial draw against Spezia (2-2), he lost on AC Milan (4-1), then at home last weekend against Genoa (3-2), after having led 2-0. Mazzarri (462 Serie A appearances as a coach) is the fourth different coach to sit on the Cagliari bench in eighteen months, after Walter Zenga (March to August 2020), Eusebio Di Francesco (August 2020-February 2021) then Semplici (since February 2021).
If he has never coached in Cagliari, Mazzarri has evolved there as a player, even making his Serie A debut in September 1982. He will start on the bench on Sunday on the fourth day of the championship, in Rome, against Lazio by Maurizio Sarri.
