Alexis Corbière was the guest of CNEWS this Friday, January 14. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s spokesperson took Laurence Ferrari as an example to define « wokism ».

Friday January 14, the spokesperson for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Alexis Corbière, was on the set of CNEWS. Come to speak about the recent disagreements between Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of National Education, and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise (LFI), the topic got out of hand the neo-movement that is making the news, “wokism”. After recalling that “woke” means to be « awake » in the face of discrimination and inequality, the one who is also elected from Seine-Saint-Denis took as an example the journalist to illustrate his definition. “You do not accept that women are paid less than men, so you are awake to the cause”, began Alexis Corbière. And to add: “You don’t like racism, you are awake to the fight against racism. You are woke, Laurence Ferrari”.

« Don’t tell the rest of the editorial staff », he then slipped, before giving the floor to Laurence Ferrari, who tried somehow to get back to the heart of the matter. “This is the news of the day”, she quipped herself, smiling. This tease came in the middle of an interview, while the left-wing deputy denounced the attitude of Jean-Michel Blanquer, very active in the fight against « wokism ». The Minister of National Education and Jean-Luc Mélenchon have been piqued on the subject for several weeks, dealing with each other “wokist”, and of “helpful moron”

A word no one understands?

On the neo-movement which is making the news, the native of Béziers did not develop further, because, according to him, “it would take several hours for that”. “I don’t need an English word to say it! We invent words, but we no longer know what we are talking about”, said Alexis Corbière. “Me, I speak with my mother who is 80 years old, she says to me ‘what does all this mean?’ No one understands anything anymore”, he lamented. “Wokism” is defined by being aware of and being attentive to issues of social justice and racism (“woke”). The Anglo-American term « woke », the root of the word, appeared in the United States in the 1990s. It resurfaced following the Black Lives Matters movement in 2014. Appeared in France in 2018, wokism was then considered an ideology, and perceived as pejorative.
