VIDEO – The Porsche 911 GT3 RS already has a Nürburgring record
While Porsche only lifted the veil on the GT3 RS a few weeks ago, the tracker is already in the coal on the Nürburgring. And it already has a small record: it is the fastest naturally aspirated car on the famous “Green Hell”.
We all knew it was coming. As soon as Porsche unveiled the 911 GT3 RS, we knew it would sooner or later be heading to the Nürburgring. And a record at the Nürburgring is the holy grail of motoring: it tests a car in its entirety. Engine, gearbox, brakes, aerodynamics, grip, chassis… it puts everything to the test. Cut to the chase, the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 RS recorded a time of 6:49.328 minutes around the famous 20.8km Nordschleife, the most recent track. Porsche also clocked 6:44.848 for the shorter lap. The car was driven by brand ambassador and endurance racing legend, Jorg Bergmeister. An official was present to check the lap time.
The GT3 RS used by Bergmeister was equipped with the Weissach package. Porsche has also opted for 20-inch front and 21-inch rear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, which are optional in the catalog. The GT3 RS completed the lap 10.6 seconds faster than the classic GT3. The previous generation GT3 RS, also equipped with the Weissach pack, completed the same track in 6:56.4. For this round, Porsche has removed the infotainment system and air conditioning. It’s no longer an option on the new GT3 RS, but we’re sure Bergmeister could have done the same with these on-board technologies.
Better than other supercars?
Has it broken the absolute record for production cars? No. You have to compare what is comparable and therefore look at the time of 6:44.848 around the shortest version of the circuit. The longest lap includes the T13 straight, which adds a few seconds. Thus, on this route, the competition is fierce. Before the arrival of the new GT3 RS, the Top 5 includes the Lamborghini Huracan Performante LP640-4 (6:52.01), the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (6:47.25), the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ LP770-4 (6:44.97) , the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (6:43.616) and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey Racing (6:38.835).
The new time of the GT3 RS (6:44.848) officially makes it the third fastest production car around the « Green Hell ». It is 1.2 seconds behind the AMG GT Black Series and less than eight seconds slower than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS MR. Most impressively, it beat the previous generation GT2 RS. The GT3 RS 992 is now officially the fastest naturally aspirated car on the famous German track, as it is faster than the 770hp Aventador SVJ. Another great performance for Porsche’s new weapon: this lap time was achieved with « only » 525 horsepower, while all the other Top 5 contenders have around 700 horsepower. under the hood. Nice performance!
