VIDEO – Can the latest Porsche 911 Turbo S beat the legendary 918 Spyder?

Our colleagues at CarWow wanted to know if a very recent Porsche 911 Turbo S could hold its own against the brand’s hypercar released in 2015. What better than a drag race to check it out?

The latest Porsche 911 Turbo S is very fast. Especially during drag races. But can it compete with the most successful production Porsche of all time, the 918 Spyder? Our British colleagues at CarWow lined up the two cars side-by-side to see which performs better in a series of races. Just to see if the modern sports car can face a hypercar considered avant-garde in 2015. Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 based on the engine of a prototype racing car, the 918 Spyder also has two electric motors. Positioned on each axle, these motors bring the total power to 887 horsepower. That’s a lot more than the last-generation 911 Turbo S, which puts out 650 horsepower from its 3.8-liter twin-turbo Flat-6. Its extra motors and the batteries that power them, however, add some weight to the 918 Spyder.

Weighing 1,640 kg, the 911 Turbo S is not the lightest car on the market either, but it weighs 35 kg less than the hybrid hypercar. This seems negligible, but could make all the difference on cars so close in terms of performance and over such a short distance.

the race

In the first race (400 meters from a standing start), the more modern car behaved remarkably well and took the victory, although this was mainly due to the better start taken by its driver. In the end, the superior power of the 918 Spyder allowed it to win two of the three races online, but only just. In rolling races, its big power advantage allows it to easily beat the 911 Turbo S.

Despite this, the most modern car holds up. In other words, one can almost say that Porsche customers who buy a 911 Turbo S today find themselves with a car in their hands that has a level of performance of hypercar (or almost)… at a much lower price although still exorbitant for ordinary mortals.
