Varane cites his example of youth

One would have thought that Laurent Blanc was the main source of inspiration for Raphaël Varane, as the vice-captain of the Blues displays similarities with his glorious elder. But spontaneously, he rather evokes Lilian Thuram.

Raphaël Varane, who rarely leaves the groove of banalities in interviews, recalls that it is « important that we can help young people to try to improve, to follow the right path and to do their best ». However, what is (a little) less usual for him is to decline some names that served as a model for him during his own childhood : « I don’t have a single hero, but I was watching some defenders like Lilian Thuram and other French players, including Zinedine Zidane of course. »

« We want to win everything »

Remember that the 2018 world champion, transferred last year from Real Madrid to Manchester United, knew the 1998 world champion as a coach for four seasons in the Spanish capital (from 2016 to 2018, then from 2019 to 2021) with in particular three Champions Leagues at stake. As for his new adventure at MU, undoubtedly cheered up by the latest results after a start to the season that is almost as calamitous as the previous one, the French defender assures of the ambition of the group: « We want to win everything. We know that the Premier League is very difficult and we prepare every day to be ready to try and win all the trophies possible. »

Manchester United do not participate in the Champions League, which incidentally caused the turmoil around Cristiano Ronaldo before the transfer market closed. And also allowed to see that the Red Devils have revived without him, which now forces him to get in tune in order to continue on this new found dynamic. And for the Portuguese as for the French, and even for a large majority of the workforce, almost two months before the World Cup, of course…
