under the government of nationalist Modi, it is sometimes not good to be a Muslim in India

A new bout of religious violence took place in India on Monday: Hindu activists stormed and set fire to the home of a former Indian foreign minister.

Police say around 20 members of a local Hindu extremist group gathered outside Salman Khurshid’s home in Nainital, northern India. Shouting anti-Muslim slogans, they threw stones at the politician’s home, before setting his front door on fire. According to the Times of India daily, the demonstrators also burned an effigy of the former minister, fired shots and threatened the janitor’s daughter-in-law with a gun.

The former foreign minister (2012-2014) was out with his family at the time of the incident, but he posted photos of the damage caused by the attack on social media. « So that is the debate now. Shame is not a strong enough word, he reacted. Jwas hoping to open these doors to my friends who left this business card. Am I still wrong to say that it can’t be Hinduism. «

Salman Khurshid, a Muslim member of the main opposition party, the Congress Party, published a book last month in which he compared this type of extremist Hindu nationalism, promoted under the tenure of Indian Prime Minister Mahindra Modi, to the Islamic State group. .

Exacerbated religious nationalism

Other disturbing incidents took place a few weeks ago, after a match of the T20 Cricket World Cup, which opposed, on October 24 in Dubai, India to Pakistan, a Muslim nation. Yet great favorite, India had bowed at the end of the meeting to its adversary, and eternal political enemy. But some players from both teams may not pay much attention to this rivalry. And the picture was beautiful at the end of the match: Indian captain Vrait Kohli kisses Pakistani player Mohammad Rizwane

But this photo does not at all summarize the state of mind of Hindu nationalists in India. Just minutes after the end of the match, insults rained down on social networks. They target the only Muslim player in the Indian team, Mohammed Shami. He is accused of being a traitor to India. But that’s not all: supporters of Pakistan will be chased by the police across the country … A repression, sometimes very severe, approved by members of Mahindra Modi’s party.

Human rights activists believe that religious minorities in this predominantly Hindu country face increasing discrimination and violence since Indian Prime Minister Mahindra Modi’s nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in 2014. In 2020, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom classified India as « country of particular concern« for the first time since 2004.

The Modi government denies having a radical project of « Hindutva » (Hindu hegemony) and ensures that the inhabitants enjoy equal rights regardless of their religion.

Numerous fatal incidents have already taken place in the country.

A country of 1.3 billion people, India is 80% Hindu. However, the country has the second largest Muslim population in the world, with 170 million Muslims, or 14% of the Indian population. This minority today feels threatened.

In 2019, violent clashes rocked the country following the adoption of the citizenship law. It is about a project of regularization of refugees, through a reform of the law on nationality. The Indian parliament rejected this project in 2016. It finally approved it on December 11, 2019. But the text provides for the exception for Muslim refugees, who; they cannot be regularized. Following the adoption of this law, abuses followed demonstrations by opponents of the text. Dozens of people have died.
