Near Nantes, on the multisport ground of Île Forget in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire (Loire-Atlantique), a dozen children are having fun under the eyes of two sports leaders.
Sport in the meadowis the name of the activity offered this summer in the Loire Valley. Immersed in an ocean of greenery, children are introduced to sports for free every Thursday afternoon of 3 to 6 p.m..
Olympic label
« Today, it is collective tri-sport, a period of football, a handball and a basketball », explains Fabrice Bonhour, one of the two sports animators present. Ultimate, archery, team sport… Many activities are offered. The goal? Help people discover various practices through fun activities.
Coach of the Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire women’s handball team (National 2 women), Fabrice Bonhour supervises the animation and gives his advice to young people who have come to have fun. The handball coach is accompanied by Luis, a player from the local rink-hockey club.
Sport on the prairie is part of Terre de Jeux 2024, an Olympic label to bring the Paris 2024 adventure to the people of Sebastien and promote sport in the town.
« With this label, we had organized several Olympics in two schools in the city », specifies Philippe the son-in-law, municipal councilor at the town hall of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, in charge of sport.
To spend and let off steam
Among the children present, Gabin and Martin, two cousins aged around ten enjoy the sports practiced.
We like to work out and make new friends!
On the field, we run, we pass the ball, we laugh and we rejoice when a goal or a basket is scored. During the afternoon new faces join the game, adding to the numbers.
The children present come from all over Nantes, from Saint-Sébastien to Carquefou via Le Loroux-Bottereau. Budding and seasoned sportsmen and women practice a common activity together, creating new friendships.
Loire Cool
In summer, Île Forget turns into a true leisure island. Sport on the meadow takes place as part of the Loire Cool, a family program that takes place from July to September around the Cloud Station.
This is the third edition of the Loire Cool, a summer event organized by the town hall of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire.
With the Loire Cool, we wanted to offer free activities for families who do not go on vacation.
As part of the Loire Cool, the town hall offers reading workshops, concerts or games of skill, in addition to sports activities on Thursday afternoon.
Active and sporty city
Sport in the meadow is part of the sports policy of the municipality, very attached to its sporting dynamism. Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire has 41 sports associations and more than 10,800 licensees in its territory.
Often rewarded for being the most sporting city in the Pays de la Loire, the Loire commune will soon be in the spotlight.
« Next Thursday (Editor’s note, August 27), the mayor will be in Brest to receive the Active and Sports City label », specifies Philippe Le Gendre. This distinction promotes local initiatives in favor of physical, sporting and recreational activities.
Satisfied with the positive feedback from parents and children, the municipality has already planned to repeat the experience next year, while retaining « an organization on a human scale ».
