UL Plantières Metz dreams of a feat against AS Nancy Lorraine

Historic meeting for UL Plantières this Sunday, November 14. The small amateur club in the suburbs of Metz faces AS Nancy Lorraine in the 7th round of the Coupe de France. After many adventures, the match will finally be played at the Saint-Symphorien Stadium at 2 p.m.

For the first time in its history, UL Plantières will play in the 7th round of the Coupe de France football. The small club in the suburbs of Metz, which qualified in the previous round against the Haut-du-Lièvre team (2-1), was served in the draw. Residents of Regional 3, the equivalent of the eighth division, the Messins fell on AS Nancy Lorraine, which as a Ligue 2 club made its entry into the competition.

« It was our ideal draw! We were all hoping to fall against a professional team and against Nancy in particular, compared to the rivalry that exists with Metz. Chance has done things well! » says Jordan Santos, the captain of the ULP.

Six gap divisions

After the euphoria of the draw, the Moselle leaders quickly became disillusioned. Their small stadium was not considered compliant to host the meeting. The risks of confrontation between Metz and Nancy supporters being real, security could not be guaranteed. Impossible either for the small club to pay the 60,000 euros, which involved the organization of the match at the Saint-Symphorien stadium.

The French Football Federation therefore decided to reverse the match and have it play at the Stade Marcel Picot in Nancy. A heart-breaker for Moselle fans, annoyed at having to evolve far from their bases. Especially since their supporters would certainly have been banned from travel by the prefecture of Meurthe-et-Moselle.

Objective: 3,000 spectators

« The magic of the Coupe de France was not respected! I posted a message on Facebook expressing our disappointment, relates Richard Pagnat, the coach of UL Plantières. Bob Tahri, who is deputy to the City of Metz and elected for the Grand-Est Region, saw it and he asked all the communities to give us a hand « .

Region, Department, Metropolis, City of Metz… the former athlete from Metz succeeded in obtaining 39,000 euros to help the amateur club. The match can therefore finally be played in Saint-Symphorien, this Sunday at 2 p.m.

« This represents 60% of the sum. With the endowment of the FFF, the ticket office and the refreshments, we should not lose money, if we make more than 3,000 spectators. That is the objective! » explains Richard Pagnat.

There is a real outpouring of solidarity from other amateur clubs!

Richard Pagnat, coach of UL Plantières

Only the lower stands of the Saint-Symphorien stadium will be open to the public, i.e. nearly 7,700 seats. The ticket office for the meeting, which opened this Thursday, is working well.

« There is a real outpouring of solidarity. Many amateur footballers will play at the same time as us this Sunday and will not be able to come and watch the match, but they still bought us tickets to support us », explains the ULP coach.

The match of their life

The only downside in this case: the Nancy supporters were banned from traveling by the Moselle prefecture, because the risks of clashes with the Metz supporters were too high.

The UL Plantières players who are aiming for the rise in R2 this season (they are currently at the top of their championship) are anyway ready to play the match of their life.

« We only have that in mind. We are all very impatient and very excited, says Jordan Santos. Even if the FC Metz field will be bigger than those we usually play on, we have a young team, which has a lot of physical qualities and we are going to give ourselves 300%! «

Faced with a team from Nancy last in Ligue 2, the little poucet Metz dreams of achieving the feat in this Lorraine derby of a new kind to be able to continue his fantastic epic in the Coupe de France.

With UL Plantières and ASNL, nine Lorraine clubs will compete in the 7th round of the Coupe de France this weekend. Here is the program:

All the results will be available on Sunday from 7 p.m. on the sports page of your regional newspaper.
