Transfers: Nicolas Benezet leaves Guingamp for Colorado Rapids (MLS)

While he felt he was « fooled » when his final transfer to Toronto FC did not materialize, Nicolas Benezet will finally stay in MLS. The 28-year-old attacking midfielder signed with the Colorado Rapids. Guingamp has reached an agreement of up to € 500,000 with the Denver franchise (9th in the Western Conference in 2019) to release him from a contract that expired next June.

Jérôme Meary concluded this deal. It is this adviser, who had already placed the ex-Caennais in Toronto last July, that the player had criticized for not having been definitively sold to Toronto in December. This departure to Denver even almost did not materialize. Because of Benezet’s statements with regard to his former managers as well, Toronto no longer wanted to release him from his rights to the player with MLS.

Meary blew that hurdle, as the player wanted to stay in Major League Soccer, after 13 matches (3 goals) in four months of competition. The attacking midfielder has signed up for two seasons (plus an optional one) for the Rapids, where iconic former US goalie Tim Howard has just ended his career. He will earn a salary of around € 600,000 per year, almost three times more than in Guingamp in L2.
