Toronto FC’s Italian delegation grows

Toronto FC are ready to relive the great moments of their history for their fans, having acquired another Italian star, Federico Bernardeschi, on Friday.

Like the ‘atomic ant’ Sebastian Giovinco seven and a half years ago, Bernardeschi was acquired from renowned Juventus on a free transfer. The information had leaked in the media several days ago already, and Toronto has confirmed that it has offered a designated player spot until 2026 to the winger.

The 28-year-old athlete rubbed shoulders with his compatriots and new teammates Lorenzo Insigne and Domenico Criscito on the national team. The Italian trio could bring rain or shine to Toronto.

« Having met Federico a few weeks ago, I believe he will fit in well with what we are trying to build here at ‘TFC’ and I can’t wait to send him on the pitch. He is an offensive player who is also known to work hard for the team,” said Toronto FC head coach and athletic director Bob Bradley in a statement.

Putting on his instructor’s jacket, the American explained that he could use Bernardeschi in his natural position, the right wing, but that he could also choose to move him in the axis if necessary.

It is with his speed on the sides that the Carrara native generally does the most damage, being also a good taker of corner kicks. In 183 appearances in all competitions in five years with ‘Juve’, he has racked up 12 goals and 24 assists.

« Federico has proven himself to be a champion and a leader at Juventus and for the Italian national team and he brings a unique experience to Toronto, » said President Bill Manning, proud to bring a strong new voice to his changing room.

Before going to play in Turin, Bernardeschi went through Crotone and Fiorentina. He thus joins a club which is not Italian for the very first time.
