Toronto FC lose their top scorer

As if things weren’t bad enough for Toronto FC, the team announced on Friday that their top scorer, Canada’s Ayo Akinola, had gone under the knife and would miss the remainder of the 2021 season.

The 21-year-old forward underwent surgery on Thursday to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the “Reds” announced on Twitter.

With three goals in 11 games, Akinola leads Toronto FC in scoring, tied with midfielder Jonathan Osorio. The youngster had scored nine goals in just 15 games last season.

Nothing is going well for Toronto this season. The club sit 13th and second to last in the Eastern Association of Major League Soccer rankings, having won just three of their 17 matches. Coach Chris Armas was shown the door in July, after just 15 games.
