[Top 50] # 44: Jamal Adams, the slugger | Touchdown Actu (NFL Actu)

From May 15 to July 3, TDActu presents its Top 50 NFL players. To arrive at this ranking, each member of the editorial staff voted for the 50 players they would like to have on their team to start the coming season. These rankings were then compiled to form the final Top 50. The opportunity to debate, but also to present 50 profiles to those new to the NFL.

Jamal Adams – Safety – Seattle Seahawks

ID card : 25 years – 1.85 cm – 97 kg

Draft: n ° 6 in the 1st round of the 2017 Draft – LSU

CV: first Team All-Pro (2019), second team All-Pro (2018, 2020)

2020 stats: 83 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 3 defended passes, 1 forced fumble in 12 games.

Career stats: 356 tackles, 2 interceptions, 21.5 sacks, 28 defended passes, 7 forced fumbles in 58 games.

Why is he here?

No safety is more scary than him in terms of pass rush. Adams is pretty much a linebacker. His 9.5 sacks last year set a new record in his position. An old-school slugger, he’s an intimidating presence for any forward, including the quarterback.

In the line of Kam Chancellor, this power is his first asset. But it should not be summed up to that. Adams is one of those defenders who weigh in on a game. He can rock the meeting in all ways. Or almost.

In recent months, the cover qualities of issue 33 have sometimes been called into question. Against the Jets, his former team, he notably released a ready-made interception. And by playing so close to the line of engagement on so many stocks, he’s bound to be exhibiting his team’s coverage on a regular basis. It’s not to be caricature: Adams hasn’t had a good season, but he can be good in the air. Maybe not elite, but very good. It’s up to him to return to his best standards in the months to come.

What objective in 2021?

Playing the whole campaign would already be a first victory, as Adams has not managed a full season for two years. In 2020, he missed four games and sometimes seemed to decline on the pitch, especially in the playoffs.

Adams also needs to be stronger on cover. The old-fashioned safety is no longer successful in a league turned towards the pass. He has to adapt to really help the Seattle defense to sublime.

The good news for the Seahawks in the short term is that Adams is entering the final year of his contract. He therefore has several million good reasons to take care of his form and his game. The bad thing is that it will probably be necessary to check out… a second time. As a reminder, the Seahawks have already dropped two first-round picks in New York to recover it.

Heard in the editorial

» Pay two 1st rounds of draft for a safety? Really ? It seems excessive in this modern NFL where defending the pass has become a must, and that is clearly not its strength. However, his contribution is indisputable, especially to attack the pocket (9.5 sacks in 2020). »Jean-Michel Bougeard.

“It’s the Top 50 scam. A sort of excellent hybrid nowhere except in pass rush. He’s not bad, but he has nothing to do there. «  Victor Roullier.
