[Top 50] # 31: Jaire Alexander, receiver hell | Touchdown Actu (NFL Actu)

From May 15 to July 3, TDActu presents its Top 50 NFL players. To arrive at this ranking, each member of the editorial staff voted for the 50 players they would like to have on their team to start the coming season. These rankings were then compiled to form the final Top 50. The opportunity to debate, but also to present 50 profiles to those new to the NFL.

Jaire Alexander – Cornerback – Green Bay Packers

ID card : 24 years – 1.78 cm – 89 kg

Draft: n ° 18 in the 1st round of the 2018 Draft – Louisville

CV: second All-Pro team (2020)

2020 stats: 51 tackles, 1 sack, 1 safety, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, 13 passes defended in 15 matches

Career stats: 171 tackles, 4 interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 1 safety, 41 defended passes, 2 forced fumbles, 1 covered fumble in 44 games.

Why is he here?

In three seasons in the league, Jaire Alexander has established himself as one of the very best in his role and the clear leader of his team’s defensive backfield. It must be said that the player is part of a rare category, that of cornerbacks so dissuasive that the opposing quarterback tries to avoid throwing in his direction.

Because despite a modest size, Alexander does not let himself be counted. Fast and aggressive, he speaks for his consistency meeting after meeting to evolve at a very high level. A real pot of glue, it has become a nightmare for recipients. Last season, he completely extinguished these opponents, allowing only 29 receptions out of 70 throws for 316 yards, or less than two per game. Some of the best receivers in the league have remained completely silent on him. The Allen Robinson, Mike Evans or Calvin Ridley returned to the locker room with no ball captured.

Performances that did not go unnoticed. The player enjoyed his first Pro Bowl selection in 2020 and the honors of the 2nd All Pro team. Ranked as the best cornerback of the season by Pro Football Focus with a rating of 90.5, Alexander is a feared and respected defender who is now one of the best in the position.

What objective in 2021?

After a high-flying 2nd part of the 2019 campaign, and a flamboyant 2020 exercise, Alexander must remain in the long term as a dominant and feared cornerback. If these qualities of shutdown corner are now known and recognized, Jaire has other assets that his new coordinator could take advantage of. Very intelligent and with a good readability, it would benefit from being used in the slot by sequence or in blitz phases to further disrupt enemy attacks. By gaining even more efficiency, he could approach the title of defender of the year.

With two interceptions in particular in the NFC final, insufficient to send his team to the Super Bowl, he proved that he also knew how to manage the pressure of big meetings. Like his team, the player will seek to bring the Lombardi trophy home in 2021 after two consecutive campaigns failed at the gates of the Big Game. With this in mind, he will also have to become a big brother to mentor Eric Stokes, another cornerback drafted in the 1st round, and help him quickly become the number 2 cornerback that Green Bay lacks.

At the start of its fourth season, its major importance in the defense of the green and gold will have to pay off. The franchise will not let go of the one who has become one of the faces of the team. New record of dollars in the key? Likely.

Heard in the editorial

“Excellent cornerback and author of a very high level 2020 season. Already in my top 3 CB, if it confirms in 2021, it could tickle number 1. «  Raphael Masmejean

“He’s an incredible cornerback, as his small size didn’t let you guess. «  Victor Roullier

“Alexander the great, always ready to spring in front of the attacker. Also one of the proofs that Green Bay has a great team and that Aaron Rodgers grumbles for nothing. «  Alain Mattei-Florin
