Tokyo 2020 Indian medalists including Neeraj Chopra congratulated at Ashoka Hotel

Neeraj Chopra, India’s first Olympic gold medalist in athletics, silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya and bronze medalists Bajrang Punia, Lovlina Borgohain and the Indian men’s hockey team were all congratulated by Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Law Minister and former Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju at the Ashoka Hotel on Monday. PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu, the other two medalists in Tokyo, had been welcomed back home and were not present at the ceremony.

There was absolute frenzy at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Monday as people flocked to catch a glimpse of their Olympic heroes. Neeraj, Bajrang, Ravi, and Lovlina were helped as they walked through the crowds to get into their cars and head to the Ashoka Hotel in Chanakyapuri.

Highlights of the arrival and congratulations of the Indian medalists

All the athletes – Indian Track and Field, Wrestling, Boxing Contingent and Indian Women’s Hockey Team – as well as the medalists, all received a grand reception at the hotel, following which the medalists were congratulated during a ceremony.

The Minister of Sports congratulated all the medalists and athletes and called them the Olympic Games « several firsts for India ». He spoke of the pride every Indian felt as the national anthem was played in an Olympic stadium because of Neeraj. for ending the country’s 41-year wait for a medal at the Olympics. He praised the women’s hockey team for their colossal effort, praised the golf feat of Aditi Ashok, the fencing effort of Bhavani Devi, the sailing feat of Nethra Kumanan, the new Asian record of men’s 4x400m relay team, Avinash Sable’s new national record in steeplechase and more.

He said: “The IOA has done everything to support you, you have worked as hard as you can to make India proud. « 

He also spoke about the efforts and support provided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and revealed how involved he was in the whole process. “PM asked him how all the athletes trained, if the parents were all happy, if the vaccination was done for everyone. He spoke to the athletes even after they lost and gave them confidence. If a prime minister of a country can do it, young people will not be left behind. «

Even Kiren Rijiju explained how Prime Minister Modi called for massive preparation in Tokyo for athletes, but the coronavirus pandemic has ruined all those plans.

All the medalists present at the ceremony received moments and bouquets. Bajrang thanked everyone and explained why he chose to fight for the bronze medal with a brace on his injured knee. Lovlina expressed her joy for the love and support she received and hoped to continue winning medals for the country.

The captain of the Indian men’s hockey team, Manpreet Singh, explained that his team is his family and they will meet again soon to start training for the next tournament. Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh said they all won thanks to the support of their families and praised women’s hockey goaltender Savita for her massive effort in the team’s historic campaign.

Ravi explained how Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt inspired him and Neeraj gave a glimpse of his state of mind, which makes him click on the bigger stage.

Rijiju said the moment was so huge that words couldn’t describe it. “When we were watching you in Tokyo, we felt the pain too, because we were playing for you. When you woke up at 5 am, we encouraged you. We are very proud of you, ”he said.

He thanked Neeraj for dedicating his medal to “Flying Sikh” Milkha Singh and said it was a huge achievement to even compete in the Olympics. “Gold, silver and bronze medals are names but they are made of blood, tears and sweat. On behalf of all the Indian people I want to thank you once again. I want to thank all the coaches and IOA and everyone who worked in the background to make them superstars, ”he concluded.
