These are the most popular words on Google in 2022


Google has just unveiled its 2022 list of the most popular words on its search engine. It is divided into several categories and highlights the most popular queries made by people around the world throughout the current year.

Wordle, game of the year

In first place in this ranking, we find wordlethe game created by Josh Wardle and inspired by the American title Lingo (Motus in France). Acquired last January by the New York Times for a seven-figure sum, this word game has grown from 90 participants on November 1, 2021 to over a million today.

In third position in global searches, Ukraine has fueled the international debate in recent months, followed by Queen Elizabeth in fourth position, who died on September 8th. The second and fifth places are tied to India’s cricket ties against England and South Africa.

The most requested films and series

In the series category, the top of the ranking is occupied by Euphoriafollowed by House of the Dragon, Moon Knight, The Watcher and Inventing Anna. These series show the stranglehold of streaming platforms on popular searches. Dahmer, the Netflix docufiction about the American serial killer, is in sixth place. The series has also recently exceeded one billion hours of viewing on Netflix.

The top 5 movies consist of Thor: Love and Thunder, black adam, Top Gun Maverick, The Batman and Encanto from Disney.

Conflicts between stars fuel research

On the celebrity side, Johnny Depp occupies the first place because of his defamation lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend. He is followed by Will Smith, following an altercation with Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars. The actor went on stage to slap the comedian just before receiving the best actor statuette for his role in The Williams Method.

The « man in black » is ahead of the ex-girlfriend of the Caribbean pirate, Amber Heard, who ranks third. This is followed by Vladimir Putin, fourth, and Chris Rock, fifth. Regarding athletes, the first three places are occupied by tennis players: Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams. Despite the FIFA World Cup, neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi is in the top 10 searches.
