The very big scare of Bayern, which wins its 10th German Supercup by defeating Leipzig
Bayern were ruthless against RB Leipzig and won 5-3 in the German Super Cup, in a match full of suspense, thanks to goals from Musiala, Pavard, Gnabry and… the first from Sadio Mané in an official game. Julian Nagelsmann’s men therefore start the season with a first trophy.
First game and first trophy. Bayern were jostled at the end of the match and finally won 5-3 against Leipzig on Saturday and thus offered their 10th German Supercup.
The Bavarians had thought to seal the meeting when they returned to the locker room with 3-0 on the scoreboard, but that was without taking into account the spectacular comeback of Leipzig. A first official match for the two clubs, which also saw Sadio Mané’s first official goal with Bayern.
A one-sided first period
The German champion had activated the steamroller mode very early in the match and had opened the scoring very quickly through Jamal Musiala. The young midfielder was responsible for concluding an offensive action which stagnated in the area without ever finding the nets. With a powerful strike at the entrance to the surface, he opened the scoring and launched the machine (1-0, 14th).
After a goal canceled for offside to Christopher Nkunku, the Bavarians take the break thanks to their summer recruit: Sadio Mané. The Senegalese projected himself at the same time as Gnabry, who serves him in his race in front of goal. He only has to push to sign his first achievement in an official match under the Bavarian tunic (2-0, 31st).
Julian Nagelsmann’s men will return to the locker room with a good 3-0 lead, thanks to the goal of Benjamin Pavard at the very end of the first period, who strikes after a withdrawal from Musiala at the penalty spot (3-0, 45th). A one-sided first period, where Bayern shot six times on goal, for four shots on target and therefore three goals.
The entry of Dani Olmo is a game-changer
Back from the locker room, Dani Olmo and André Silva enter and reverse the trend. On a corner, Marcel Halstenberg jumps higher than everyone and manages to concretize the good start of the second period of RB Leipzig with a good header (3-1, 60th). A short respite since on a Bavarian counter, Müller projects and stumbles on Gulacsi, but Gnabry follows and signs the fourth goal (4-1, 66th).
Sadio Mané even thought to increase the score on a very nice ball stung on the Hungarian goalkeeper. But he is finally reported offside (71st). After a tackle with both feet off in the area on Dani Olmo, Benjamin Pavard offers a penalty to Leipzig, which picks up at 4-2 after the very good transformation from Christopher Nkunku (4-2, 77th).
Leipzig will have maintained hope
A counter-time which will not change the score, since Sadio Mané is again close to the double in the 80th minute. A double which the Senegalese is again close to at the very end of the match when he is served by Kingsley Coman, but he is (still) flagged offside (85th).
We thought the game was over but André Silva sprang up and served Szoboszlai at the entrance to the surface. The Hungarian shifts for Dani Olmo on his left and concludes with a sublime cross shot which revives the game (4-3, 89th). Leipzig pushes again and is close to the feat on a fleeing cross from Dani Olmo that no one manages to cut (90 + 2nd).
Leroy Sané to crucify Leipzig
The men of Telasco will offer themselves a very last opportunity thanks to a hand from Lucas Hernandez, who thought he was playing a touch but took the ball before it even crossed the line (90 + 5th). Leipzig will finally come to be crucified on a solo counter by Leroy Sané, who recovers a very long raise from Alphonso Davies before chaining the hooks in front of the young Spaniard Novoa-Ramos. He ended up deceiving Gulacsi, who had remained standing despite his dribbling (90 + 8th).
FC Bayern therefore won the German Super Cup for the 10th time, further extending its own record. Bayern have lifted the trophy in each of the last three seasons, as only Bayern themselves managed to do from 2016 to 2018.
