The United States eclipses Iran

The Americans got the better of the Iranians on Tuesday in the third and final act of the group stage of the 2022 World Cup (1-0). The United States thus join the Netherlands in eighth.

Played in a particularly tense international context, the ultimate shock of Pool B of this World Cup between the United States and Iran saw the victory of the Americans, this Tuesday evening in Doha. On the smallest of margins but with the most beautiful rewards at stake (1-0): a place among the eighth finalists of the tournament.

To do this, the USA relied on a goal from Chelsea player Christian Pulisic in the first period – an achievement signed at close range on a service from Sergino Dest and with a stamp from the opposing goalkeeper as a bonus (1-0, 38e). Just before the break, in extended additional time, Timothy Weah thought he had doubled the lead, but the Lille player found himself trapped for offside (45e+7).

At the break, the essential is acquired for the Americans, generally dominating, but the latter will play to scare themselves until the end against the Iranians who are more and more pressing over the minutes. A final confused action in the US area will see Mr. Lahoz, the Spanish referee of the game, deny Iran the requested penalty – probably rightly (90e+7). It is indeed the United States who ultimately reach the round of 16 of this World Cup, with the Netherlands in their sights. First in this group B on arrival, the English, who defeated the Welsh at the same time (3-0), have an appointment with Senegal.
