While many Ligue 1 players are in selection for the international break, let’s take a look at the most impressive statistics from this start to the season in the league. More
After eight days and while the clubs are resting during the international break, let’s come back to this start to the Ligue 1 season. What are the figures to remember? Which statistics should be highlighted in particular?
What is the start of the “MNM” season worth?
Paris Saint-Germain’s start to the season is almost perfect. With two victories in as many Champions League matches and seven games won out of eight in Ligue 1, the Parisians already dominate the championship. Beyond these figures, it is the state of mind of the players that is put forward. The Parisians would be much more involved and the attacking trio at an exceptional level.
In order to better compare the statistics of the trio compared to previous seasons, we are interested in the number of minutes passing between two goals or assists of these players in Ligue 1 (Lionel Messi is therefore also compared to his statistics in Barcelona). Thus, it is possible to compare performances despite the low number of meetings this season and the years truncated by COVID.
Mbappé constant, Neymar more effective than ever
Over the past three seasons, Mbappé has managed nearly one goal per game in Ligue 1 (one goal every 93 minutes on average). During the first eight games of this Ligue 1 season, Mbappé scored every 84 minutes, a result in his average of recent seasons. Neymar, for his part, displays statistics this season far superior to the last seasons. This season, he scores every 77 minutes in Ligue 1, a figure almost twice as high as in previous seasons! We note, finally, that Messi, after a complicated season, is getting closer to his statistics for the last Barcelona seasons.
Mbappé less passer, Neymar and Messi impressive
The numbers are all the more telling when looking at assist statistics. If Mbappé has not succeeded this season, no assist in Ligue 1, Lionel Messi and Neymar turn to impressive statistics. Authors, respectively, of a decisive pass every 88 and 101 minutes, the two stars offer a lot of caviars. It’s quite simple, in their entire career, Neymar and Messi have never reached such figures in the league.
Ligue 1, the red card championship?
If you follow Ligue 1 diligently, you must have noticed that a lot of red cards have come out this season. What could be the reason? Let’s analyze the expulsion figures compared to other seasons and other leagues.
The statistics are very interesting on the subject. When comparing the number of fouls and yellow cards per game, the figures are surprisingly extremely consistent across seasons. Since 2017, the number of fouls per game and the number of yellow cards per game has not changed by more than 5%. The explanation does not therefore seem to come from a really more violent start to the championship.
Conversely, when we look at the number of red cards distributed this season in Ligue 1, we notice very quickly that this figure explodes. While in recent seasons the number of red cards per game has stagnated between 0.22 and 0.27, the figure has almost doubled this season (0.42)!
The explanation could be very simple: the number of red cards has increased, because the rules of European football have evolved. Unfortunately, the comparison with foreign championships cancels this hypothesis. With 0.42 red cards per match, Ligue 1 is, in fact, largely « ahead » of the other European championships. Special mention for the Premier League, whose referees have so far been very stingy with red cards this season.
This L1 season is therefore made up of some of the players with the most impressive statistics in its history and referees drawing faster than their shadows. We are definitely looking forward to the French championship resuming!
