The 105th edition of the Indy 500 will be the occasion to celebrate 110 years of longevity for the fastest race in the world, « The Greatest Spectacle in Racing » as our American friends call it.
The 105th edition of the Indianapolis 500 is so diverse, so great that it’s almost indistinguishable who might be doing well, but a few favorites are of course obvious.
Indy 500, the starting grid
Some drivers have more experience and / or a better track record on the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval Circuit. Others have stronger teams, with more experienced engineers and more seasoned team members.
Speed is not only essential on the track: the speed of pit stops always seems to be a determining factor at the end of the race. What about luck? Some drivers seem to have it for « The Greatest Spectacle in Racing », while others are still looking for a little help.
Among the favorites, Scott Dixon, the poleman, obviously, he was also the fastest on Carb Day, the last free practice session. His victory at the Indy 500 dates back to 2008, he finished second last year behind Takuma Sato. Colton Herta, on the first row, winner of 4 times in the IndyCar Series will participate in his third Indy 500 … Rinus VeeKay has qualified again like last year (P4), unfortunately by hitting a member of his team at the pits in 2020, its race was complicated!
We could also be wary of Ed Carpenter who won 3 pole positions at the Indy 500 and finished second in 2018! The boss-pilot will start behind her pilot Rinus VeeKay, the two men should be watched. What about Tony Kanaan, winner of the 2013 edition? Not yet retired, back for his « TK Last Laps », the Brazilian shows that he still has some under his feet. We can also mention the surprise Alex Palou at Ganassi, winner of the opening race of the 2021 season, the Spanish driver can become a safe bet!
In the third row, Ryan Hunter-Reay, already winner in 2014, he recently turned 40 and could become the 18th 40-year-old driver to win the Indy 500. As for the Helio Castroneves and Meyer Shank Racing association, that works rather well, the Brazilian could also increase his record from 3 to 4 victories. Marcus Ericsson is the 4th Ganassi driver on these first 3 rows, proof that the formation of Chip Ganassi will be formidable.
On the following lines, note Alex Rossi, the rookie winner of the 2016 edition who wants to breathe new life into his career, Takuma Sato hopes to seek a third ring and achieve the back-to-back, Scott McLaughlin, rookie this year is the highest ranked Penske driver. Our French set off quite far, on the 9th line, but nothing is ever decided in advance at the Indy 500.
the Green Flag will be agitated at 6:45 p.m. French time!
