Ian Book will be the starting quarterback for the Saints this Sunday. But that wasn’t necessarily the Saints’ first option. According to the Times Picayune, San Payton pushed Drew Brees to convince the legend to come out of retirement for just one game.
While on vacation in Hawaii with his family, Brees reportedly seriously considered the idea, before finally declining. Obviously, he wasn’t sure he could be effective with so little preparation.
More surprisingly, Philip Rivers would also have been contacted. Like Brees, the former Chargers and Colts pitcher would only have agreed to come back to start. But he also ended up refusing.
Josh McCown and Luke McCown also reportedly received a call. Again, nothing at the end.
The Saints would still trust Book, but against Miami’s aggressive defense, they hoped a veteran might be more comfortable.
