Sunday night’s embarrassing loss was the nail in the coffin for the Philadelphia Flyers.
After losing 7-1 at home to the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Flyers fired head coach Alain Vigneault and assistant coach Michel Therrien. Assistant coach Mike Yeo has been appointed interim head coach.
The Flyers entered 2021-22 with high expectations after a busy offseason that saw them acquire Cam Atkinson, Keith Yandle and Ryan Ellis. They started well with an 8-4-2 record in the first month of play, but an eight-game losing streak derailed the Flyers’ season.
Philadelphia is now 8-10-4, seven points from a playoff berth in the highly competitive Metro Division.
Vigneault was hired by the Flyers before the 2019-2020 season. He led the team to a very good season as the team was 41-21-7 when the league was shut down due to COVID-19. In 2021, the Flyers took a step back, going 25-23-8 and missing the playoffs.
Overall, Vigneault is 74-54-19 with the Flyers. Vigneault’s 147 games in three seasons with the club mark his shortest tenure as NHL head coach. He coached 540 games in Vancouver, 410 with the New York Rangers and 266 with the Canadiens.
