The Florida Panthers won’t want to make it a habit, but they once again overcame a big deficit before beating the Buffalo Sabers 4-3 on Friday at FLA Live Arena.
Sam Bennett completed the comeback for the Florida squad with 38 seconds left in the game.
The Sabers started the game in fine fashion, taking a 3-1 lead after one third. Victor Olofsson, on the power play, Mark Pysyk and Jeff Skinner were the authors of the goals for the Buffalo team. It was the 30th goal of the season for the latter, often criticized for his offensive production due to his hefty annual salary of $9 million.
On the side of the Panthers, Claude Giroux made the red light sparkle for the 20th time of the season, in addition to being an accomplice to the goal of Sam Reinhart, which leveled the mark. Aleksander Barkov had two assists in the victory for his team.
Former Montreal Canadiens Dustin Tokarski was machine-gunned in front of the Sabers cage, he who flinched four times in 43 attempts. Sergei Bobrovsky was much less busy than his rival, with 19 saves.
The « Canes » surprised at home
At the PNC Arena, the Carolina Hurricanes lost a rare home game, losing 2-1 to the New York Islanders.
This is only the seventh setback in regular time in 37 games for the « Canes » in front of their supporters this season.
Veteran Kyle Palmieri was a hero with just 15 seconds left in the third period. Vincent Trocheck had brought both teams back to square one just 42 seconds earlier.
Franco-Ontarian Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the game’s only other goal in the middle of the second period.
Ilya Sorokin only needed 20 saves to add a win to his record.
DeBrusk continues to fill the net
At Amalie Arena, Jake DeBrusk shook the ropes again and helped the Boston Bruins win 2-1 in overtime against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Massachusetts forward took advantage of a turnover of his own deep into crowd favorite territory and benefited from a relay from Brad Marchand before beating Andrei Vasilevskiy, just 47 seconds into the start of the second period.
DeBrusk has scored for the seventh time in his last seven games. He also brought his total to 22 goals in 2021-2022.
However, it was Charlie Coyle who ended the debate by hitting the target in overtime. DeBrusk also amassed an assist on the streak.
At the other end of the rink, Linus Ullmark did well in the victory, with 28 saves. Only Pierre-Édouard Bellemare was able to deceive his vigilance.
