The Newman/Haas Racing collection offered at auction by RM Sotheby’s
On October 29, RM Sotheby’s will be offering at auction during an exceptional sale, no less than forty competition single-seaters and a wide selection of automobilias from the Newman/Haas Racing collection.
Since 1983 and the founding of Newman/Haas Racing, Carl Haas and Paul Newman have worked tirelessly with their team to impose themselves on American circuits in the single-seater category. The structure founded by the American entrepreneur and actor/pilot has accumulated some 108 race victories as well as 8 titles thanks to pilots such as Michael and Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell and Sébastien Bourdais.
Newman/Haas Racing dominated the CART and Champ Car series between 1983 and 2011, launched from the outset by Mario Andretti who, driving a Ford Lola-Cosworth, won six victories and six pole positions during the 1984 season, before win the CART PPG Indy Car World Series. Subsequently (in 1991), it was Michael Andretti’s turn to make the Newman/Haas Racing team shine by winning the Indy Car World Series, and other « big names » followed in the 90s and 2000s. including Emerson Fittipaldi’s nephew, Christian, as well as Bobby Rahal’s son, Graham, and Newman/Haas Racing even performed a small miracle in 1993 when Carl Haas managed to sign Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell. With him, the structure won five races, and the PPG Indy Car World Series title. Mansell thus became the only driver in history to win the F1 and Indy Car titles consecutively.
In 2003, after Cristiano da Matta became the Indy Car world champion with Newman/Haas Racing (in 2002), it was the turn of Frenchman Sébastien Bourdais to shine the colors of the American structure. The most awarded driver in the history of Champ Car, won this championship four years in a row, from 2004 to 2007.
40 single-seaters, trophies and pilot equipment offered for sale
For the first time, artifacts of Newman/Haas Racing’s success will be offered to the public on October 29. 40 single-seaters entered in competition by Newman/Haas Racing will be offered to the highest bidder, and collectors will notably be able to afford the Lola-Ford Cosworth T93/00 chassis with which Nigel Mansell competed in the 1993 Indy Car season.
A suit and two helmets used by the British driver will also be offered for sale, alongside a helmet signed by Sébastien Bourdais, as well as the gloves and several suits worn by Mario Andretti (as well as one of his helmets). Several trophies won by Newman/Haas Racing in the CART and Champ Car series will also be among the prizes on offer.
As for the chassis presented, we will find in particular the Lola-Cosworth T700 with which Mario Andretti started out in the colors of Newman/Haas Racing in 1983 (he won twice at the wheel), or the Lola-Chevrolet T91/ 00 with which Michael Andretti won three of his eight victories during the 1991 season.
