The MLS-LIGA MX revenge next August
Major League Soccer (MLS) confirmed Thursday that its next All-Star Game, scheduled for August 10 at Allianz Field in St. Paul, will be another showdown pitting its best players against those of Mexico’s LIGA.
The clash broadcast on the TVA Sports channel at 8:30 p.m. that day will thus be an opportunity for the representatives of Mexico to avenge their failure in the shootout at the 2021 classic held in Los Angeles.
After a 1-1 tie in regulation, MLS had the last laugh 3-2 in the penalty shootout, thanks in part to two saves by New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner and the decisive goal by Ricardo Pepi , at the time with FC Dallas.
« Last year’s game between the MLS All-Stars and the LIGA MX All-Stars was the most competitive All-Star game ever, and we are happy to renew the rivalry between the two leagues this summer » , Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement.
« Our partnership with LIGA MX has brought the best of both leagues on and off the court, and I have no doubt the intensity will be even higher for the Minnesota rematch, » he said. he adds.
The match, part of a series of events organized jointly by the two circuits, will be the culmination of a week of celebration of soccer. Two days prior, a five-time Grammy-nominated Khalid concert will perform in downtown Minneapolis. The following day, the traditional skills competition will be held at the home of Minnesota United FC which can accommodate approximately 19,600 people.
On this occasion, 10 players from each league will compete in five competitions: the challenges of shots, passes, the crossbar, crosses and volleys, and, finally, the « Touch Challenge ». Last year, the LIGA MX had the upper hand during these events.
Other social activities for the community are also planned by the organizers.
