The League Cup and the Campeones Cup are back
Major League Soccer (MLS) and Mexican Football League (Liga MX) have announced the return of two competitions featuring some of the best teams on their circuit.
As of next August, four clubs from each league will begin their League Cup journey, an event that will be in its second presentation.
MLS took the opportunity to reveal that Kansas City Sporting, Orlando City SC, Seattle Sounders and New York City FC will be its representatives. The four Mexican teams will be announced after the conclusion of the circuit playoffs.
This tournament will be played entirely in the United States and will conclude with the final on September 20, 2021.
In addition, MLS and Liga MX will also host the third Campeones Cup between the champions of the two circuits.
This means that on September 27, the Columbus Crew will receive the future Liga MX champion club.
Currently, the two leagues are tied for the winners of this trophy. In 2019, Atlanta United FC defeated Club America, while in 2018, the UANL Tigers toppled Toronto FC.
« We are delighted to continue to strengthen our partnership with Liga MX, » MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement from his organization. In the past, we have seen the great rivalry that exists between the MLS and Liga MX teams. These events will allow fans to see their club compete in an important international game, while also generating interest in our two leagues. ”
