The Flyers will be deprived of Couturier for several weeks

Sean Couturier will miss the start of training camp amid what the Philadelphia Flyers have called an upper-body injury.

The 29-year-old center player, who hasn’t played since December 18, is still recovering from back surgery he underwent on February 11. Couturier said Sept. 12 that he « feels good » and will fully participate in Flyers training camp, which begins Wednesday.

The Flyers said Couturier’s absence would be weeks and his health would be reassessed during camp.

“Fitness has been long, longer than I thought, and with ups and downs, but now I feel good and I’m ready. I can’t wait to start again,” Couturier said on September 12.

The Flyers went 12-12-5 in 29 games with Couturier last season. They averaged 2.66 goals per game and allowed 3.17 goals per game. Without him, they went 13-34-6, averaged 2.51 goals per game and allowed 3.81 goals per game.

Couturier was Philadelphia’s first-round (8th) pick in the 2011 draft. He had 460 points (180 goals, 280 assists) in 721 regular season games and 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 39 games Stanley Cup playoffs.
