The Devils qualified for Euro 2023… but who are the Belgian core players?
The Devils shared the stake, Tuesday evening, in Denmark (1-1). This point qualifies them for the next Euro U21 which will take place in Georgia and Romania from June 9 to July 2, 2023.
A qualification acquired thanks to an almost perfect balance sheet (19 points out of 21). But who are the main players in the Belgian nucleus trained by Jacky Mathijssen ?
Maarten Vandevoordt23 years old, Genk
Present in the Limburg club since he was nine years old, the goalkeeper has already played 69 games for Genk. The club is renowned for its formation of quality last ramparts and Vandevoordt justifies this reputation. At 17 years, 9 months and 10 days, he became the youngest goalkeeper to play in the Champions League.
Ewoud Pletinckx21 years old, Zulte Waregem
The central defender is a lesser known name in the selection, but he is one of the sure values of the base eleven of Jacky Mathijsen. Pletinckx is captain in his training club where he will soon reach the 100-game mark (93 played so far). Unless he crosses a threshold by being transferred this summer.
Koni De Winter19, Juventus
He too was partly trained in Zulte-Waregem. But since the summer of 2018, the young central defender has been learning at Juventus. Although he has not yet played a single minute in Serie A, De Winter can boast of being the youngest holder in the history of Juventus in the Champions League (19 years and 179 days).
Logan Ndenbe22, Kansas City
Reputed to be a great talent, Ndenbe was hampered in his progress by a serious knee injury. He had his professional debut in Ostend before flying to Guingamp where he learned his skills, then to Kansas City, in MLS. This choice has raised questions, but the left-back maintains that this is a growing league.
Hugo Siquet19 years old, Freiburg
The right-back received all his training at Standard, where he played 43 games before leaving for Freiburg this winter. Siquet has not played a single minute at his new club and is taking his troubles patiently. His selection with the U21s was therefore a breath of fresh air.
