After the Florida Panthers enjoyed another dominating offensive weekend with back-to-back 6-1 wins over the Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings, they extended their winning streak to 10 games and find themselves in quite a rare territory.
They currently have a +99 goal differential, one less than the third team in the salary cap era to have a +100 goal differential, alongside the 2005-06 Ottawa Senators and the 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning. .
Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk appear on the Daily Faceoff Show to talk about the Panthers’ dominant season.
Seravalli: “It’s also a historic offensive season, or at least it’s about to get there, if you take a look at this table as well. And it’s that the Florida Panthers are on the verge of setting the NHL’s salary cap era record for goals in a single season. You see the Tampa Bay Lightning, one of the best regular season teams ever, 319 goals in 2018-19. I didn’t get them much, as they ended up being swept in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
But the Florida Panthers are six goals away from setting that salary-cap-era record. With all the goals scored in the 80s, there are plenty of teams that reached 400 goals, but still, in those days, nowadays, to be north of four goals per game is absolutely ridiculous. And you take a look at the Florida Panthers and their players this season, 11 or 12 of them set new career highs, or at least tied career highs in goals, assists and / or dots. Jonathan Huberdeau is squarely in the hunt for the Art Ross Trophy as we enter the final two weeks of the regular season. It’s been a crazy year for the Florida Panthers.
Yaremchuk: « Yeah, it’s been crazy, and you’re talking about these guys reaching career heights, new guy Claude Giroux, coming in and fitting into this roster like a glove in the way he’s able to produce. I mean, 16 points in 13 games since joining the Panthers, there’s no doubt he’s been an impact piece for him.
And the other thing that I like is that you find these random guys in programming who find ways to produce. A guy like Gustav Forsling, in that 10-game winning streak for the Panthers, he scored seven goals. I couldn’t even tell you if Gustav Forsling scored seven goals in his entire career. But he did in that 10 game streak. He is also one of the most successful 3-on-3 players in the NHL this year.
The fact that they have their big guns spinning, and like you said, a bunch of guys that just have career years, that’s crazy for the Panthers, and they’ll be looking to avoid the fate that this team high-scoring Tampa in 2018-19 does when it comes to the playoffs.
Seravalli: “Yeah, I have a feeling they’ll be in better shape. It will all depend on the game, I think that’s why it’s so important to keep an eye on the standings. The Washington Capitals, they have a lot to play for in this final stretch here to try and avoid the Florida Panthers team like an absolute jigsaw in the first round.
