Barely back from the international break, the European clubs have already had to resume hostilities with important matches this weekend. It is nothing compared to the week which awaits the biggest clubs of the continent and the gala matches which are on the program. Between the European meetings, the Classico of the Spanish championship, that of the French championship and the shocks throughout the weekend, the week promises to be spectacular.
If this weekend, the lawns of Ligue 1 were the theaters of good performances, and that England offered goals, like Leicester’s card against Manchester United, this week of October 18 has a good chance to do even better.
On the European scene, receptions to follow
The fireworks start this Tuesday with the return of the inevitable Champions League. On the program, the two French clubs involved will be opposed to teams that are difficult to maneuver and terribly unpredictable. Paris Saint-Germain will host Leipzig Tuesday evening, opponent that the players of the capital know well for having eliminated him lors of the Final 8 of the 2019-2020 Champions League. A clash between two modern formations, within a group where Manchester City must catch up and where Paris has the opportunity to fly away.
For his part, Lille will host the Andalusian squad of Sevilla FC, quite prominent in La Liga. Not the strongest in the Champions League so far, the two teams will fight to ensure their survival in this competition and will certainly give rise to a thrilling battle. Elsewhere in Europe, Atlético de Madrid to host Liverpool for a reunion that promises to be explosive. Beaten in their Anfield lair at the start of 2020, the Reds want to repair the affront to the champions of Spain in an almost impregnable Metropolitano. At last Benfica Lisbon will host Bayern Munich, while the Portuguese have fond memories of the last C1 game against Barça, and their 3-0 victory. Another kettle of fish awaits the Germans, but the dynamics of this meeting could well be intense.
In the Europa League also the Ligue 1 clubs will play big with Olympique de Marseille, which will have to do better than its two previous draws on the lawn of Lazio Rome, knocker of Inter this weekend. A huge challenge for the Phocaeans, while Monaco will go on the lawn of PSV Eindhoven for there again, try to go and look for which would be like a great feat.
A tantalizing weekend
In Ligue 1, barely recovered from the emotions of Europe, Olympique Lyonnais, who will have traveled to Prague, will challenge Nice. Galtier’s team certainly seems less leggy, but just as dangerous, especially at the start of such a match. Corn the shock this weekend in France will take place at the Parc des Princes since Paris will host Marseille on the occasion of the Grand Classic. PSG are obviously favorites but the new Marseille dynamic can allow them to feed all hopes.
The Classic will therefore be played, by chance of the calendar, the same weekend as the legendary Spanish Clasico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid on the lawn of Camp Nou. The hierarchy seems, this season, to lean towards the Merengues but the poster could make people in Barcelona want to transcend themselves.
In Italy, AS Rome will host Naples for a top of the championship while Inter Milan, defeated in Rome against Lazio in the general chaos, will host Juventus Turin which comes back from the bottom of the table at an incredible speed.
Finally in England, the shocks follow one another and this weekend Liverpool, who will be back from his trip to Madrid to face Simeone’s men, will be measured against his enemy of always, namely Manchester United. An important match for Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammates who must recover, while Mo Salah and his family have the championship lead in the sights.
A dozen shocks concentrated in barely a week of competition will animate the next seven days with strong emotions to be expected.
