Unsurprisingly, Edmonton Oilers star forward Connor McDavid will be EA Sports’ highest-rated player in its upcoming installment, NHL 23.

The captain of the Canadian squad has indeed earned a overall of 95, the highest of all positions. Centers Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Nathan MacKinnon (Colorado Avalanche), who incidentally just signed the most prolific contract in NHL history — $100.8 million for a term of eight years — close behind McDavid with a score of 94.

MacKinnon’s Colorado teammate Cale Makar also earned a overall of 94, becoming the best defender in the game, ahead of Roman Josi (93) and Victor Hedman (93).

Crosby or Ovechkin?

Despite Alexander Ovechkin’s 50 goals and 90 points last season, EA considers the Pittsburgh Penguins captain a cut above his Capitals rival. Indeed, Sidney Crosby was given a rating of 93 this year in NHL 23, while Ovi received a rating of 92. The Russian still finds himself at the top of the rankings among left wingers, tied with Quebecer Jonathan Huberdeau (Calgary Flames) and Artemi Panarin (New York Rangers).

As for the right wingers, it is once again the American Patrick Kane who stands out with a overall of 93. Nikita Kucherov (Tampa Bay Lightning), Mikko Rantanen (Colorado Avalanche) and David Pastrnak (Boston Bruins) follow him with ratings of 92, 91 and 91 respectively.

Among the goaltenders, it is once again the target of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Andrei Vasilevskiy, who wins the prize, with a score of 94. His counterpart from the New York Rangers, Igor Shesterkin, is his closest pursuer with a overall 92. John Gibson (Anaheim Ducks), Jacob Markstrom (Calgary Flames) and Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets) all tied for third among NHL 23’s top goaltenders with a 90 rating.

In addition, Montreal Canadiens fans will be heartened to learn that Cole Caufield completes the top 10 NHL players aged 23 and under, according to NHL 23, with a rating of 84. Carolina, Andrei Svechnikov, and Buffalo Sabers defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, sit at the top of this list with a overall 88. For his part, the electrifying Trevor Zegras, who was retained on the cover of NHL 23, received a rating of 87.
