The arrival of rain tires in NASCAR is confirmed

Rain tire test in Martinsville

In October we announced that NASCAR was studying the possibility of using 20223 rain tires on certain ovals. According to Round and Track journalist Bozi Tatarevic, the decision has now been made and NASCAR will offer rain packages including tires on 15 of the 38 events scheduled on the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series calendar.

Wet tires will normally be offered at Martinsville, New Hampshire, North Wilkesboro, Phoenix and Richmond Short Tracks. The 2023 season-opening race at the Coliseum in Los Angeles should also have this package including rain tires available.

Standing water on the track should always delay the start of a race, because the risk is too great on an oval, whatever the track. On the other hand, this package with grooved tires should allow the track to dry quickly once the race is restarted.

Wet tires are unlikely to stay on the cars for long as teams will have to switch to slicks as soon as a dry line begins to form. A real time saver for NASCAR which will reduce the length of neutralizations in the event of rain. On the team side it will add a strategic side if a race starts with rain tires.
