The 2022 Sport Trophies: Nicolas Vermorel – candidate n°1

Discover the portrait of Nicolas Vermorel, swimming champion, who is competing against 11 other athletes for the title of sportsman of the year 2022. The prize will be awarded on February 16 during a special evening organized by Polynésie la 1ère.

Nicolas Vermorel comes from the Circle of Swimmers of Polynesia and joined in 2017, with his younger brother Guillaume, another circle, the even more prestigious Swimmers of Marseille.

While Guillaume is putting an end to his high-level career to study graphic design, Nicolas, thanks to his skills, persists.

He now rubs shoulders with the big names in French Olympic swimming, such as Florent Manaudou or even Mehdy Metella, whom he « sometimes beats in training ». Thanks to a time of 52 »52, he obtains in 2021 the title of vice-champion of France on 100 meters butterfly.

His coaches say of him that he has plenty of room for improvement, that he has great muscular flexibility, that he is “a real fish”.

At 22, he is more than ever part of the French hopes for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

  • Vice-champion of France 2021 in Chartres in France (100m butterfly)
  • Qualified for the 2021 World University Championships
  • Top 7 of the best French times of all time

Your sporting debut, an anecdote, a memory?

“In Bora, I went to the sea every day and when I arrived in Tahiti, I missed it. Let’s say I had a surplus of energy, so my parents sent me into the water to « calm down » and I really liked it. I started swimming in the pool when I left Bora Bora for Tahiti. I joined the Cercle des Nageurs de Polynésie with my brother, one of the three big swimming clubs located in Papeete. »

What do you like about your sport, why did you choose it?

“In fact, I feel like the water chose me! My parents didn’t watch us too much, my brother Guillaume and me. We were pretty free, in a way. I have a story. I think I must have been about 10 years old; while I was surfing I got carried off a bit. I was able to come back on my own and no one noticed! We will say that I was able to learn to play in the water young, so I was able to become a small fish. »

Describe your training, your coaching, your nutrition?

“I train 6 days a week with workouts at least twice a day.

I do 18 hours of swimming and 5 hours of physical preparation per week, not to mention warming up, stretching, physiotherapy, cold baths, massages etc… I also take 1h30 of nap per day. My meals are simple based on carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and proteins, I avoid processed products and I try not to acidify my body. My rhythm of life is: swimming, eating and sleeping. »

A message for the population, your philosophy of life, any advice?

“I am very lucky to have been able to join the Cercle des Nageurs de Marseille, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who support me and who have allowed me to get this far. For me, the purpose of life is to have a plan: do something that makes you happy. And once you have found your project, your passion, try to make it your daily life and there you will see that the routine is not boring. That’s what I try to do every day! »
