After yet another victory against Dallas on Monday night in Game 6 (2-0), the Tampa Bay Lightning won their second league title. Sixteen years after the first, in 2004.
One final shutout for the road – but the first in this 2020 Stanley Cup final – and the Lightning is back at the top of the NHL.Winner of Dallas 2-0 in Game 6 on Monday night in the Edmonton bubble, Tampa Bay clinched the second league title in franchise history, sixteen years after the first and only coronation of the Floridians so far, obtained in 2004 at the expense of Calgary (4-3). His second trophy, the Lightning got the right to lift it after an even easier (4-2) success against the Stars. The Texans had signed a perfect hold-up from the start thanks to a huge game from their Russian goalkeeper Anton Kudhobin, imperial in Game 1, but Tampa Bay then logically took control of this final. Before the Stars revived in Game 5, the Lightning had even flown away, and since Game 4, only one last victory was missing to climb back on the top step of the League sixteen years later.
And to think that last year, Tampa Bay was kicked out …
As a symbol of this domination without really sharing the Swedish defender Victor Hedman, elected MVP of the play-offs (10 goals, 12 assists), and his teammates, this success of the issue came on Monday in Game 6 and without Dallas, for the very first time, managing to score a single goal. It must be said that the future champion walked on this last meeting as he crushed the series more generally. Twice, Tampa Bay has materialized its mastery of debates. The first time by the inevitable Brayden Point, top scorer in the play-offs (14 goals, 19 assists, 33 points in total), served in the first period (13th) by Nikita Kucherov, who finished, him, best scorer of this final phase. Blake Coleman, in the second period (20th, assisting Paquette and Maroon), for his part, scored the goal of deliverance. And the goal of the coronation also for this team from Tampa Bay which thus offers itself the most beautiful revenge. A year earlier, when he had left everyone in their rearview mirror during the regular season, the Lightning had indeed been knocked out of the play-offs, by the Columbus Blue Jackets, moreover on a humiliating 4-0. A disillusionment definitely forgotten since Monday. And how !
