Stellantis still observes IMSA for other brands

BD, Le Mans – Last month, an agreement was reached and formalized to eventually allow the presence of Hypercars in the United States on IMSA races. Presented as « historical » and the result of discussions that involved manufacturers engaged in current or future LMH or LMDh programs, the decision opens the door to the entry of Hypercars initially designed for the WEC on events such as the 24 Hours of Daytona or the 12 Hours by Sebring. The process will integrate performance balancing with the LMDh, through four technical elements already determined (tires, acceleration profile, braking capacity and aerodynamics).

Ultimately, this possibility will be of particular interest to Glickenhaus, who had already expressed his desire to be able to run the 007 LMH across the Atlantic. On the other hand, Peugeot takes a more reserved look on the question, or at least different. At a time when the French manufacturer is actively preparing for its arrival in WEC, in 2022, the idea of ​​seeing the future 9X8 file the American bitumen is not current. In any case not in the same form as in the World Championship.

« For the Peugeot brand, which does not sell across the Atlantic, that does not necessarily make a lot of sense from a purely marketing point of view », admits Jean-Marc Finot, director of Stellantis Motorsport. The door is therefore rather closed for the 9X8, but not necessarily for its technical base, which could however be used with a view to pooling resources by another manufacturer of the group, born from the recent merger between PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Among the brands of Stellantis present on the American market, we can cite Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo or Maserati.

« The question arises of using the technical basis of the Peugeot brand for other brands in the group », admits Jean-Marc Finot. « Nothing is being built, it’s just something we are thinking about for now, but there is potential available. In this case, it will no longer be a Peugeot, it will be the technical base operated by another brand. This is an opportunity that we are going to document. « 

The concept of the Peugeot 9X8, presented at the beginning of July, is still in development and the first turns of the wheel are still planned for the end of the year. Its entry into competition is scheduled for 2022, at a time of the season that remains to be defined.
