Star man invited to take over from Everton to appease Benitez’s growing unrest – Marseille News

Tim Sherwood believes Everton fans don’t buy into Rafa Benitez’s way and urged Richarlison to step up and help his manager.

Benitez was a controversial choice to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park. The Spaniard knew that a positive outcome was the way to reduce the backlash. And things got off to a good start as the Merseysiders won four and pulled one of their first six high profile games.

However, they have now hit the pads, with just two points in their last five games. They have slipped to 11th place in the table and there are signs of unrest among the supporters.

Scoring goals has been the problem, with Dominique Calvert-Lewin still out of action. The Englishman has been absent since August 6 with a thigh injury.

Everton have only scored four goals in their last five league outings. They managed to keep Tottenham in a 0-0 draw last time around.

Sherwood is not sure whether the former Real Madrid boss’s football philosophy is right for the club. But he feels an international striker of Richarlison the experience must have a greater impact.

“Rafa takes pride in keeping the sheets clean, keeping them tight and fighting back,” he told Sky Sports (via HITC). “But, unfortunately, that’s not what Everton fans want to see.

“They want to see a team on the front of the stage, [playing at] 100 miles an hour, loads of tackles are flying, spreading the ball, putting it in the box, filling the box with offensive threats, and right now they can’t do that.

“Yes, Calvert-Lewin is injured. Richarlison needs to start getting in tune.  »

Jury still present on Benitez

Benitez was not the first choice to fill the position of Everton. His connection with Liverpool made it difficult for some Evertonians to take hold.

He needs to change things quickly but faces a tough trip to the Etihad to play against Manchester City on Sunday. There were some positives. But Sherwood thinks the fans want more from their team.

Richarlison argues with his Everton teammates to take the penalty against Brighton in August 2021

“We have seen that Demarai Gray has been brilliant since he joined the club with Andros Townsend,” he added. “It gives them a threat, but it’s not enough, it’s not what they’re asking for there. «

Richarlison was heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain this summer. But the French giants would no longer want the South American.

He has scored two top-flight goals in seven appearances this season.
