Squad, Draft and goals for the season

At the dawn of the 2022 season, We Sport looks back on the situation of the 32 NFL franchises. Today, focus on the Pittsburgh Steelers, orphans of Ben Roethlisberger.

The balance sheet of Pittsburgh Steelers last season

For Ben Roethlisberger’s last season, the Steelers offered a last dance to their historic quarterback. Thanks to an exemplary defense, where TJ Watt gleaned the defensive player of the year trophy, Pittsburgh snagged the last ticket for the playoffs, chaining in passing an eighteenth season with a positive or neutral record. Unfortunately, the adventure ended, as in 2020, as soon as Wild Cardsleaving the Steelers winless in the playoffs for six years now.

The movements of the off-season

The end of an era. As expected, Ben Roethlisberger bowed out at the end of the last exercise, leaving a gaping hole in the quarterback position. To replace him, Pittsburgh tried two bets: revive Mitchell Trubisky, who is coming out of a successful period as backup in the Bills, and develop Kenny Pickett, a local child drafted in the first round this year. To surround the future holder, the franchise will not be able to count on JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington, who have left, but on the sulphurous rookie George Pickens. Note that Chukwuma Okorafor has been extended on the right side of the offensive line, while James Daniels replaces Trai Turner inside.

Finally, it is above all the defense that has been improved during the offseason. If she had to accept the retirement of Stephon Tuitt, she records the arrival of Myles Jack on the second curtain, but also of Damontae Kazee in the rotation of the secondary where Minkah Fitzpatrick was extended at a gold price. The defensive line was also rejuvenated, with the arrival of Larry Ogunjobi and rookie DeMarvin Leal.

Major arrivals: OG James Daniels (Bears), LB Myles Jack (Jaguar), S Damontae Kazee (Cowboys), DT Larry Ogunjobi (Brown), QB Mitchell Trubisky (Bills)

Notable departures: QB Ben Roethlisberger (Retirement), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (chiefs), OF Stephon Tuitt (Retirement), OG Trai Turner (Commanders), WR James Washington (Cowboys)

Extensions: DB Minkah Fitzpatrick, TO Chukwuma Okorafor, LB Robert Spillane

Draft*: QB Kenny Pickett (Pittsburgh), WR george pickens (Georgia), DL ByMarvin Leal (Texas A&M)

* Only the players selected during the first two days are mentioned.

The number of Pittsburgh Steelers 2022/2023

In Pittsburgh, the big strength will be the defense and especially the pass rush, where TJ Watt or Cameron Heyward have something to worry about any offensive line. The inside of the linebacking line will rest on the newly formed Devin Bush/Myles Jack duo, while Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds form, perhaps, the best safeties duo in the league. There is, however, less reason to be rave about cornerbacks, where Pittsburgh is still looking for a leader capable of covering the best opposing receiver.

In attack, certainties are not legion, but Najee Harris, George Pickens and Chase Claypool are interesting options on the skill positions. Offensive performance will greatly depend on the level of the starting quarterback, whether it’s Mitchell Trubisky or Kenny Pickett, or even Mason Rudolph.

Pittsburgh Steelers : Ambitions and ranking

With a new quarterback at the helm, who has not yet been identified, the Steelers will move towards the unknown in 2022. If the defense still seems able to carry the franchise, it’s hard to have big ambitions with so many doubts around of the most important position. In a particularly tough division where everyone will be aiming for the playoffs, Pittsburgh will not want to be the turkey of the farce, they who have never been last in theAFC North since its creation. There’s a first for everything, but let’s hope Mike Tomlin’s men push this one away.

Player to watch: Najee Harris

Retired Ben Roethlisberger, a diminished attack and a rookie or old backup under the center, what are the certainties in attack for the Steelers? Maybe Najee Harris is one of the answers. Productive for his rookie season (1200 yards on the ground), the former Alabama will be one of the keys for Pittsburgh on this side of the field. If he maintains his performance, the Pennsylvania franchise will be able to base its attack on it, while relieving pressure from the shoulders of his quarterback. Clearly, if Najee Harris is level, Pittsburgh may not have its head under water.
