Gianluigi Buffon on Monday dismissed any idea of retirement after his departure from Juventus Turin by giving himself a few days to decide his future which, according to several Italian media, should bring him back to his home club, Parma, in Serie B.
« I do not have an answer yet, I am leading some important reflections which, in the end, will take me or abroad, to play in the Champions League as a holder, or in Italy », answered the legendary Italian doorman, 43, at the microphone of the television Mediaset, on the occasion of the inauguration of its goalkeeper academy. « Either way, it will be something I won’t regret », he assured.
One thing is certain, he said: he will not retire and he will not do the lining again at a club, as he did until this season at Juventus.
According to several media including the Gazzetta dello Sport where the Corriere della Sera, the most likely option is a return to Parma, relegated to Serie B, with a starting place and the captain’s armband.
It was in Parma, in 1995, that Buffon made his Serie A debut, at the age of 17. He won with the club the UEFA Cup (ex-Europa League) and the Italian Cup in 1999 before joining Juventus in 2001 where he spent the rest of his career, with the exception of a stint at Paris Saint-Germain for one season (2018-19). With 657 matches, he is the record holder for the number of matches played in Serie A.
