“Spirit of Carrera RS” special exhibition at the Porsche Museum – 4Legend.com – AudiPassion.com

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 – undisputed icon of automotive history with its legendary « ducktail », the Porsche Museum pays tribute to it through a special exhibition – « Spirit of Carrera RS » – highlighting highlighting the sportiest 911 models since September 20, 2022. Head to Porscheplatz in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen to discover this retrospective worth seeing.

A unique and emblematic model
When the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 5, 1972, it was the world’s first production car with front and rear spoilers, paving the way for future models that stood out externally. by their sporty touch. The requirements of the base vehicle – a Porsche 911 designed for racing and rallying – were clearly defined: lightness and speed were the watchwords. To achieve the goals, Hans Mezger and Valentin Schäffer developed the 2.7-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with fuel injection from a blank sheet.

In the Sport version, the 210 hp and 960 kg Coupé goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of nearly 245 km/h: impressive for its time! The precise aerodynamics designed at the time for racing cars makes the Carrera RS unique today.

“This is the most direct transfer of technology from motorsport to series production that has ever taken place. Nothing about that has changed to this day and it’s part of a model-making tradition at Porsche. »said Andreas Preuninger, head of GT vehicles at Porsche.

A legendary model highlighted
The Porsche Museum tells the story of the RS and its racing cousin, the RSR, not only through the many cars on display but also by highlighting many anecdotes to discover between the models.

Films, photos, race posters and interactive features are also present, making this exhibit interactive.

Visitors can, for example, create their own personalized Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 by turning the model detail and kaleidoscope color wheel. To meet as many personal wishes as possible, Porsche has stuck to the principle of personalization with the Carrera RS 2.7. Buyers could choose from a wide array of colors and equipment options. The high demand took the sports car manufacturer by surprise, which had originally planned only 500 mass-produced cars for homologation.

At the center of the special exhibit is a bright yellow Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 in Touring specification, along with a rare prototype in metallic green that was used in the development of the vehicle. Between these two models, development documents, advertising brochures, price lists, the Carrera logo and an article from the customer magazine Christophorus describe the path from the development vehicle to the production-ready Porsche.

The large space normally accommodating various vehicles with its animated wall exhibits only one model making it even more unique.

An exhibition of the sportiest and most unique 911s
This display is complemented by other extraordinary cars from the Carrera RS family line, spanning five decades of Porsche history. With the 911 (964) RS and 911 (993) RS duo, Porsche has expanded the RS family to include air-cooled sports cars. The water-cooled era is represented by the 911 (996) GT3 RS, 911 (997) GT3 RS, 911 (991) GT3 RS and 911 (992) Sport Classic models, a Heritage Design Series collector’s edition from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and having a fixed rear wing.

The car’s nickname was inspired by the shape of the rear spoiler. At high speeds, the ducktail presses the 911 to the ground and thus reduces lift to achieve the ideal balance and enable higher top speeds.

With the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 half a century ago, the sports car manufacturer achieved the perfect synthesis of weight, power, aerodynamics and driving dynamics. This temporary exhibition pays perfect homage to him, also allowing you to discover rare and exciting models.
