Three brothers winning the prestigious NBA championship title, it just never happened. Giannis, Thanasis and Kóstas Antetokounmpo did it, a year apart in 2020 then 2021. The incredible story of these brothers from Greece deserved a spotlight. It is Disney + who will offer it to them soon, in a biopic entitled Rise: the real story of the Antetokounmpowhich will arrive on June 24 on the famous platform.
Everyone who follows at least the NBA knows Giannis Antetokounmpo, the famous Greek Freak of the Milwaukee Bucks, a true star on the American courts, selected six times for the prestigious All-Star Game and twice elected MVP, Most Valuable Player of the regular season. But did you know that the 27-year-old phenomenon had two brothers, Thanásis and Kóstas Antetokounmpo, who not only played in the prestigious basketball league, but were also crowned NBA champions?
The first is his eldest, now 29 years old. After being drafted in 2014 by the New York Knicks, he also joined Giannis in the ranks of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2019, and thus won the title with him last year. The second, the youngest at 24, for his part joined the NBA in 2018 and was the first of the siblings to be crowned champion, in 2020, with the Los Angeles Lakers. He has since joined a team that we know well in France, within the French basketball championship: Tony Parker’s ASVEL.
Rise: the true story of the Antetokounmpo, June 24 on Disney+
What a family, right? The Antetokounmpo are neither more nor less than the first trio of brothers to have all won a precious championship ring in all of NBA history. A feat all the more impressive, as they come from afar. As you know, Giannis and his brothers were born in Greece to Nigerian parents. The family lived in poverty and under the threat of deportation before the three brothers went to shine with their talent on the courts across the Atlantic. While their career still seems far from over, no wonder a production company hastened to tell their story. It was Disney who first jumped on this incredible but true scenario, to make it a biopic intended for its famous platform. Rise: the real story of the Antetokounmpo is an original film signed Disney +, which has just been revealed in a nice trailer:
While this trailer begins with authentic images of the Antetokounmpo brothers trying to find glory in the NBA, with of course Giannis as a figurehead, we then discover the faces of those who have been chosen to embody this fascinating family. These are notably two brothers, also in real life, who embody Giannis and Thanasis, the two brothers of the Milwaukee Bucks: Uche and Ral Agada. Two beginner actors, just like Jaden Osmimuwa who slips into the skin of Kóstas. In the role of the father, Charles, we find a certain Dayo Okeniyi, seen recently in Fresh on Disney+. And to play the mother, Veronika, it is Yetide Badaki who appears in the casting, an actress notably seen in the hit shows This Is Us and American Gods.
Directed by Akin Omotoso, a filmmaker from Nigeria, particularly acclaimed for his films Tell Me Sweet Something and Man on Groundthis biopic is co-produced by the Greek Freak himself. Rise: the real story of the Antetokounmpo will be available from June 24, exclusively on Disney+.
