Sports bras aren’t always the most comfortable clothes to wear. But can we really do without it? Answer.

In most cases, the sport requires a basic uniform: leggings, sneakers and bra. However, the latter is not necessarily pleasant to wear and, very often, it compresses our chest. A phenomenon that is difficult to bear if, like many women, you have decided to say goodbye to bras since the confinement of March 2020. But when it comes to physical activity, the bra remains essential: « you should not not underestimate its importance”, explains Dr Teodora Gratziela Crisovan to the British media “Stylist”. “Because breasts are made up of tissue supported largely by skin and Cooper’s ligaments (tough, fibrous, flexible bands of tissue that shape and support the breasts), they require support during exercise. If they don’t get it, it can lead to serious back problems, sagging chest and irreparable ligament and tissue damage,” she continues. As we age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic and, therefore, more susceptible to impacts when practicing sports such as running or HIIT. According to the professional: “the older you are, the more you will need to wear a sports bra to avoid this gravitational pull, as well as skeletal and posture problems. »

How to choose the right sports bra?

Contrary to an old belief, the sports bra is not reserved for large breasts. Everyone, without exception, should wear it. “Women with larger breasts often feel the need for support during exercise to keep everything in place, more so than other women. However, the need for support remains just as great regardless of their size. All breasts are made up of the same tissues, skin and ligaments – even if they don’t move as much, the damage is the same,” assures Dr Teodora Gratziela Crisovan.

But then, how to choose the right sports bra? Several criteria must be taken into account: beyond our personal tastes, the level of support also comes into play. This must be higher or lower depending on the activity that we practice. A detail not to be overlooked? To ensure that the bra fits us well, the breast should be wrapped in the foam cup inside.
