Should the New York Rangers consider adding beyond Tarasenko?
The New York Rangers saw an early gain from the trade of Vladimir Tarasenko, as the team added three more wins to their six-game winning streak with the new roster forward. Tarasenko has one goal and one assist in that span, and you can see how his addition has energized the Rangers lineup.
But they may not be done adding by the deadline, as they still have plenty to make another splash or two. Frank Seravalli and Colby Cohen discussed more on Daily Faceoff Live whether Rangers should make more moves and what they could possibly be.
Coby Cohen: If I’m Rangers, I’m not done. I’m still looking, especially through your trade council that you set up. And some of the names that really stick with me, guys that are interesting are guys like Ivan Barbashev, guys like Noel Acciari, and maybe a guy like Nick Bjugstad. I would like to see Rangers get a little more size in the back of their forward lineup, add some depth.
Another guy I looked at was Lawson Crouse of the Arizona Coyotes. He’s making $4.3 million and he’s got a term, but Arizona could eat some of that. They could ask for a first-round pick, they could ask for Kravtsov, they could maybe ask for Zac Jones from Hartford, he’s a young defender who I don’t think Rangers will want to part ways with if the right deal materializes.
If I’m Chris Drury, I’m looking at how this team gelled by adding a guy like Tarasenko, and I’m looking for opportunities to maybe challenge my top nine, maybe bring in a striker who could fight with Jimmy Vesey for this role on the second line, or potentially in the fourth line, to add some depth, to add some granularity. Sam Lafferty seems like a pretty popular guy these days, the way he plays in the bottom roster.
I like your trade advice Frank, and I think there are a number of forwards who are reasonably financially and otherwise who could help Rangers.
Frank Seravalli: As you pointed out, the New York Rangers for the most part kept a lot of their assets even after the Tarasenko-Mikkola trade because they had that extra first-round pick from the Nils Lundkvist trade. . The St. Louis Blues get the lower of the Dallas Stars or Rangers first-round pick, so if the Rangers wanted to, they could always come out and trade another first-round pick to add to their roster.
Not sure they need to swing that big, but as we mentioned, Chris Drury traded for four players last year at the deadline, and all four were renters who ended up walking the been for nothing.
