Scott McLaughlin wins in Portland, Will Power closes in on Indycar title

There is only one race left in this 2022 Indycar season, starting Sunday at Laguna Seca and five more drivers can hope to be crowned champions. New Zealander Scott McLaughlin managed to save a few chances thanks to an authoritative victory in Portland. After taking pole, the Team Penske driver led 104 of the 110 race laps to claim his third victory of the season.

Unfortunately for him, McLaughlin was followed directly by teammate and Championship leader Will Power. Thanks to this podium, Power increased the gap with his nearest pursuers in the classification since Josef Newgarden, on the third Penske car, took only eighth place, weighed down by his choice of tires for the last stint.

The six-time champion, Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi), managed a spectacular recovery after a missed qualification to take the last place on the podium. The New Zealander is therefore tied with Newgarden in the Championship at 20 points from Power. Given the tally of points in Indycar (50 for a victory and up to 5 points minimum, 1 for pole, 1 for having led in the race and 2 for having led the most laps), the latter is assured of his second title. (after 2014) if he finishes on the podium at Laguna Seca.

Behind Newgarden and Dixon, it is Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi), the winner of the Indianapolis 500 this year, who is the fourth contender but 39 points from Power (after his 11th place in Portland) while McLaughlin is 5th 41 lengths from the leader. Both drivers will need extremely favorable circumstances to hope to win their first title.

Difficult weekend for the French

As for the Frenchies, the weekend in Oregon will be forgotten. Romain Grosjean (Andretti) like Simon Pagenaud (Meyer Shank) had had a difficult qualifying and the race was even more difficult since they were never on the pace of the leaders.

The first was weighed down by a penalty for having bypassed the first chicane of the circuit and finished 19th. Pagenaud was stopped for a time by gearbox problems and had to settle for 23rd place, ten laps behind the winner.
