Russian Alex Ovechkin scores 750th career goal
36-year-old Russian Alex Ovechkin scored the 750th goal of his career in the North American Professional Ice Hockey Championship (NHL) on Saturday night in his Washington Capitals’ 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ovechkin joins a very closed circle of players who have scored at least 750 goals, including the Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894), considered the best hockey player of all time, Gordie Howe (801), nicknamed « Mr Hockey » and died in 2016 , and Czech star Jaromir Jagr (766).
The Russian, who has won the championship’s top scorer trophy nine times, was playing his 1,222nd NHL game on Saturday night, all with the Capitals he won the Stanley Cup with in 2018. Ovechkin, who plays right-winger, had been drafted in 2004 by the club of the federal capital. With the Russian national team, he won three World Championships (2008, 2012, 2014).
